Aloe Vera Skin Benefits Supported by Science

Propiedades Aloe Vera Para La Piel Que La Ciencia Respalda

More than six thousand years ago, the Egyptians already recorded aloe vera in their medical texts as the plant of immortality. Cleopatra used it in her beauty routine. Alexander the Great conquered the island of Socotra exclusively to secure the supply of aloe to heal his soldiers' wounds. The Mayans called it the staff of harmony.

And on our Las Coronas farm, in Carmona, Seville, Sonsoles cultivates it with the same devotion with which her grandparents cared for the olive trees.

Aloe vera is not a trendy ingredient that appeared on TikTok two years ago. It is a plant that has proven its value for millennia. What has changed in recent decades is that modern science has begun to explain why it works, molecule by molecule.

What does aloe vera really contain?

The aloe vera gel, the gelatinous substance stored in its leaves, is composed of 99% water. That remaining 1% is where the magic lies. It contains more than 75 active components, many of them synergistic with each other. It is not a single ingredient that transforms the skin. It is the combination.

Vitamins. Aloe vera contains vitamin A in the form of beta-carotene, vitamin C, vitamin E, vitamin B12, folic acid, and choline. All have direct antioxidant action on the skin. Vitamin C stimulates collagen synthesis. Vitamin E protects cell membranes from oxidative damage. Vitamin A accelerates cell renewal.

Enzymes. Eight different enzymes, including bradykinase, which reduces excessive inflammation when applied topically. This explains why aloe soothes sunburns and irritations almost immediately.

Minerals. Calcium, chromium, copper, selenium, magnesium, manganese, potassium, sodium, and zinc. Zinc is especially relevant for acne-prone skin, as it regulates sebum production and has antibacterial properties.

Amino acids. Twenty amino acids in total, seven of which are essential, meaning the human body cannot synthesize them and must obtain them from external sources. Amino acids are the building blocks with which the skin constructs structural proteins like collagen and elastin.

Salicylic acid. In small natural amounts, aloe vera contains this beta hydroxy acid that gently exfoliates, unclogs pores, and has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. This is why aloe helps so much with acne-prone skin.

Lignin. A substance that improves the penetration of other ingredients into the skin. When Isabel formulates with aloe vera, she not only takes advantage of the properties of aloe itself. She is also enhancing the absorption of all the other active ingredients that accompany the formula.

Polysaccharides. Like acemannan, which stimulates macrophage activity and accelerates tissue regeneration. It is one of the most studied components of aloe vera in a medical context.

Deep hydration, not superficial

Many moisturizers work by adding a layer of fat or silicone on the skin that prevents water evaporation. That works, but it is superficial hydration. Aloe vera hydrates differently.

Its polysaccharides act as humectants, meaning they attract and retain water molecules in the upper layers of the epidermis. But in addition, aloe vera contains gibberellins, plant hormones that act as growth factors in human skin. This means it not only provides water. It also stimulates the skin to produce more healthy cells, more collagen, more elastin.

In a study published in the journal Skin Research and Technology, it was shown that the topical application of aloe vera gel increases skin hydration by 30% after two weeks of daily use. And it does so without clogging pores, without creating a greasy feeling, without causing shine. It is hydration that breathes.

For oily or combination skin, aloe vera is particularly valuable because it provides hydration without adding lipids. For dry skin, it works better when combined with vegetable oils that seal that hydration in the skin barrier. That is why at Aloeceuticals we formulate both pure gels and creams based on aloe and complementary oils.

Real cellular regeneration

Aloe vera accelerates epidermal regeneration through several simultaneous mechanisms. Acemannan stimulates the proliferation of fibroblasts, the cells responsible for producing collagen and elastin. Amino acids provide the building materials. Vitamins protect against oxidative damage that slows repair.

In clinical studies on first- and second-degree burns, the application of aloe vera gel reduced healing time compared to conventional treatments. The regenerated skin was more elastic, with less abnormal scar tissue formation.

This does not mean that aloe vera alone heals serious wounds. But it does show that its regenerative ability goes beyond anecdote. It is a documented biological mechanism.

In cosmetics, this property translates into skin that recovers faster from daily stress: pollution, temperature changes, lack of sleep, dehydration. Skin that regularly uses aloe vera has a better self-repair capacity.

Anti-wrinkle from the root

Wrinkles do not appear overnight. They are the accumulated result of years of oxidative damage, collagen loss, elastin degradation, and decreased natural skin hydration. Aloe vera attacks this process on multiple fronts.

Antioxidant. Vitamins C and E, along with aloe’s natural polyphenols, neutralize free radicals that degrade collagen. A study from the University of Belgrade showed that aloe vera gel has antioxidant activity comparable to pure ascorbic acid.

Collagen stimulator. Aloe vera contains compounds that increase collagen synthesis in fibroblasts. More collagen means firmer, more elastic skin with fewer depressions where wrinkles form.

Structural moisturizer. By keeping the skin hydrated, aloe vera prevents dehydration wrinkles, those fine lines that appear temporarily when the skin loses water and that, over time, become permanent.

Texture softener. Natural salicylic acid gently exfoliates, removing dead cells that accentuate wrinkles and making way for new cells that better reflect light.

Immediate soothing for irritated skin

If you’ve ever opened an aloe vera leaf and applied the gel to a sunburn, you already know what I’m talking about. The relief sensation is almost instant. It’s not a placebo. It’s biochemistry.

Aloe enzymes, especially bradykinase, inhibit the production of prostaglandins and thromboxanes, mediators of inflammation. Polysaccharides form a protective film over the skin that reduces friction and mechanical pain. And phenolic compounds have direct analgesic properties.

In dermatology, aloe vera is used as an adjunct in the treatment of dermatitis, psoriasis, eczema, and burns. It doesn’t replace medical treatments but reduces inflammation, speeds healing, and improves the skin’s tolerance to other actives.

For sensitive or reactive skin, aloe vera is an ideal base for any routine. It soothes before acting. It protects before transforming. It’s the ingredient that allows other more potent actives, like bakuchiol or acids, to be tolerable.

Why isn’t all aloe vera the same?

Here lies the difference between the aloe you buy in a generic bottle and the aloe we cultivate. Industrial aloe vera is processed at high temperatures, pasteurized, stabilized with preservatives, and sometimes diluted to ridiculous limits. The result is a gel that keeps the name but has lost most of its enzymes, vitamins, and active polysaccharides.

On our farm, aloe is grown organically, without pesticides or herbicides. The gel is hand-extracted, stabilized using methods that preserve the active components, and incorporated into formulas in proportions that truly provide benefits, not just marketing. Isabel, as a pharmacist, controls each batch. Sonsoles, as a farmer, oversees each plant.

That complete traceability, from field to bottle, is what sets real aloe vera apart from label aloe vera.

Aloe vera for every skin type: it’s not the same for everyone

Aloe vera is universally safe, but not all skin types need it in the same way or formulation. Understanding how your specific skin benefits from aloe will help you choose the right product and use it most effectively.

Dry skin. If your skin feels tight after washing, has flaky areas, or absorbs cream in seconds, you need aloe vera combined with vegetable oils. Pure aloe gel hydrates but doesn’t seal in moisture. Without an oil that forms an occlusive film, hydration evaporates. Our Aloe Vera Facial Cream with Croton lechleri is ideal for dry skin because aloe provides water and the oils retain it.

Oily or acne-prone skin. Here aloe vera shines on its own. Its light texture doesn’t add oiliness. Natural salicylic acid exfoliates and unclogs pores. Zinc regulates sebum. And antibacterial properties reduce active lesions. Use pure aloe gel in the morning, then our Aloe Vera and Croton lechleri facial fluid emulsion morning and night without adding heavy creams on top. If you need more, our lightweight serum with hyaluronic acid and green algae complements aloe well on oily skin.

Sensitive or reactive skin. This is the skin that benefits most from aloe vera because it needs calming before any other treatment. If your skin reddens easily, stings with new products, or has diagnosed rosacea, aloe vera gel followed by fluid emulsion or facial cream depending on your skin condition and age should be your routine for at least a month. After that recovery month, you can start introducing gentle actives like bakuchiol.

Mature skin. With menopause, the skin loses density, hydration, and regeneration speed. Aloe vera helps on all three fronts, but for mature skin it works best when combined with anti-aging actives. Our recommendation for mature skin is Pure Aloe Vera Gel in the morning, Anti-Wrinkle Serum with Bakuchiol at night, and Aloe Vera Facial Cream to seal in moisture, morning and night.

Combination skin. Oily T-zone and dry cheeks are a challenge. Apply pure aloe gel all over your face in the morning, then follow with the fluid emulsion. At night, use the bakuchiol serum all over your face, including the T-zone, because bakuchiol regulates sebum without drying out the skin. Apply the facial fluid emulsion only on the cheeks, where the skin needs more nourishment.

How to incorporate aloe vera into your daily routine

In the morning. After cleansing, apply our pure aloe vera gel as the first hydration step. Its light texture absorbs quickly and prepares the skin for the following steps without competing with serums or creams.

At night. Aloe vera works especially well as a vehicle for anti-aging actives. Apply the aloe gel, let it absorb for a minute, then add our serum or night cream. Aloe will enhance the penetration of the other ingredients thanks to lignin.

For acne-prone skin. Use pure aloe vera gel as a light moisturizer. Natural salicylic acid helps unclog pores. Zinc regulates sebum. And the anti-inflammatory action reduces redness of active lesions.

For sensitive or rosacea-prone skin. Aloe vera can be your only moisturizer during weeks of recovery. Apply a generous layer in the morning and another at night. You don’t need more.

As aftersun. After sun exposure, apply our aloe vera gel directly to the skin. The relief sensation is immediate and cell regeneration accelerates.

It is the most versatile product in our line: suitable for face, body, sunburns, irritations, chafing. A bottle that should be in every bathroom.

Aloe Vera Facial Cream. Antioxidant, moisturizing, and regenerating with aloe vera and Croton lechleri. 99% natural origin ingredients. Creamy texture but not heavy. Ideal for normal to dry skin that needs substantial hydration, not just oiliness.

Light Facial Emulsion. Lightweight, fast-absorbing, with Aloe vera and Croton lechleri. For skin that needs hydration without heaviness. Especially suitable for combination or oily skin.

It provides hydration, regeneration, antioxidants, and improves the penetration of the six vegetable oils and bakuchiol. It is the perfect example of how aloe vera does not compete with other active ingredients. It enhances them.

Frequently asked questions about aloe vera in cosmetics

Can I use aloe vera if I have oily skin?

Yes, and you should. Aloe vera hydrates without adding oil. It is one of the few moisturizers that works well on oily skin because it does not clog pores or stimulate sebum production.

Is aloe vera effective for deep wrinkles?

For deep established wrinkles, aloe vera alone is not enough. You need to combine it with more powerful anti-aging actives like bakuchiol, peptides, or retinoids. Aloe vera acts as a hydrating and regenerating base that enhances the effect of the others.

Is it safe to use aloe vera every day?

Absolutely. Aloe vera is one of the cosmetic ingredients with the highest safety profile. It has no known topical toxicity and does not cause dependence or resistance with prolonged use.

Can I use aloe vera on the eye contour?

Yes, as long as it is a product specifically formulated for that area or a high-quality pure gel. Aloe vera is gentle and does not irritate the eye contour skin. In fact, its decongestant properties can help with dark circles and puffiness. Our eye contour cream contains Aloe vera, Caffeine, Sea Buckthorn, and Jasmine and helps with all the “little problems” around the eyes, bags, and dark circles.

What is the difference between supermarket aloe vera and Aloeceuticals’ aloe vera?

The difference lies in processing, concentration, and traceability. Supermarket aloe is usually pasteurized at high temperatures, which destroys enzymes and polysaccharides. Also, it often contains less than 10% real aloe. Our aloe is grown organically, extracted using artisanal methods, and incorporated into formulas in proportions that provide real benefits.

And now what?

Aloe vera is not a miracle ingredient that erases ten years with a single application. It’s something better: a constant ally that hydrates, regenerates, soothes, and protects day after day. Skin that regularly uses aloe vera is not the same skin that doesn’t. That difference builds up over time.

At Aloeceuticals, the aloe vera comes from our Las Coronas farm. We grow it, care for it, formulate it, and produce it in our own facilities. “We care for it from seed to bottle.” If you want to try the difference between real aloe vera and labeled aloe vera, start with our Pure Aloe Vera Gel or our Aloe Vera and Croton Lechleri Facial Cream or Fluid Emulsion.
